I think it looks pretty good, the shape is definitely there.
As for a good car for a beginner to model, well, it depends on what you like. The hardest part of modelling is keeping at it, so just make sure you pick a car you really like and won't lose interest in after awhile.
Also, modelling the car you drive in R/L would be a good place to start, as you've always got a physical reference sitting right there.
