Mesh > Smooth - oh the joys

Ok guys, im workin with Maya8....and I have a smoothing question.

When I'm doing a smooth in maya (linear) , none of the corners are preserved, it always smooths them out. Now when i do a smooth in Max teh corners are preserved...I have played around a little bit with chamfer/beveling the edges that lead to that corner to make it not smooth them out, but of course there are times when you dont want to do that. Is there any way around this??

And two, of course we all run into the non 4 sided (most of the time 3 sided) polys, and that causes havok with the smooth, is it just a good idea to not use tris at all, or try and make it look good after the smooth?


It just seems like max's smooth is so much better, and gives better results.
