Red is positive (+) and black is negative (-). A typical slow charge would probably be 2 amps and a rapid charge would be 10 amps. Some chargers have a beefier setting for fast charging for a rapid start. My best advice is to go with the slow charge and double check everything before you plug in the charger, make sure you have the cables connected to the correct terminal on the battery.
Another very important thing to know when working around batteries is to never smoke or have an open flame as this can cause your battery to explode. Battery acid in the eyes can cause blindness, easily avoidable if your careful.
