It's no problem to jumpstart a car, old or new. I used to work as a car mechanic and as long as you do it right you are safe.
Never connect the cable straight from battery to battery, the plus cable (red) you can connect from Battery plus to Battery plus, the minus (black) you should connect to ground on the car that gets the jump. I have a friend that lost a eye when he connected wrong, the battery exploded.
Battery charger. Connect the red cable to Plus and the black to minus, if the cables arn't color coded the clamps should be marked + and -.
