How To texture headlights/tailights?

when the headlights/tailights are modeled, whats the best way to texture them?

do you draw the textures urself in photoshop? or do you crop the lights of an image from a back/front view of the car and apply it to the model?

if there circle headlights you can find anything onl;ine with the round picture and just apply that and set a transparency on it

or if its a square type normal light you could use a checker texture thats repeated lots of times

or indeed you could use ur own texture if you wanted to

i usually go for a photoshop made texture
so if you have one, go to editable poly, then select polygons, where your headlight texture should be, then aply to you cylindrical light uvw map modifier, then set it to cylindrical mapping and hit fit, then apply that texture to that, if you have two cylinders, then on top of uvw map add edit mesh modifier then repeat that way as like for the first cylinder
for other object, like planar or complex shape just unwrap it and then apply a texutre on it(them)
