Lighting thin materials... E.g. plastic, paper, leaves

Hey, I was trying to light some various objects, and I figure if I were able to get a material that could show surface lighting that bled through to multiple sides, that would be great. Something like how when you shine a light on paper, you can see the other side light up as well...

Anyone know how to recreate that effect without all sorts of odd 'extra' light linking and animations?

all i know is that mental ray has it ...vray and brazil probably have it, but ive never used em myself

and yeah, its all quite complicated, i dont really know how to use it either , but its specifically for materials like skin, wax, milk, paper...anything that isnt see through as such, but still lets light go through it
