Symmetry problem

Hey
Quit often when modeling somthing (usually a car) i need to use symmetry but when i turn it on no matter what way i make it symmetrical the car doesnt line up right, the other part of the car is either underneth the car, attached the in a distorted way.

Does any one know how i can fix this

Put your centre at the zero point for position, after you do you that make sure every vert along the centre of the car is reading '0' for the axis that is is going along. To avoid any problems with this I manually type in the postion along the axis (for me)
This picture shown is where I type the position

right clicking the spinners sets things to zero, or their lowest possible value... so when I need to make sure vertices are absolutely centered, I select the vertices along the edge, then use the scale tool, and turn the transform mode to relative, then I right click the spinner axis that I want to scale down on (according to the translation gizmo). That scales it down into a completely flat line, then I go back to the move mode, and enable absolute transform type-in, and then right click on the center axis spinner, and it's guaranteed to be at the center.

a lot quicker alternative to typing in values manually
