2 materials in 1 object

I was trying to make ferrari`s rearlights. My glass material is DGS Material (physics_phen) - 1st pic. But as everybody know, the middle of the light should be white glass. Can anyone tell me how to make it without detaching middle part? Because when I chose polys that should be white and assigned material to them the rest lost it`s red colour - 3rd pic.

Uhm, You should just select the poly's you want differently colored, do so in the Edit Mesh modifier. Then, just assign the white material while still in Edit Mesh.
Always works for me.

I noticed that if I still got "box" or "cilinder" in my modifier stack it always assigns the material to the whole object.
when you're done moddelling it, collapse the stack (before putting turbosmooth or meshsmooth on it) and use the edit mesh or edit poly like Xoliul said.
Then after that add a turbo smooth or meshsmooth, to your liking...

Xoliul`s and darth carth`s ideas doesn`t work. I`ve got 2 materials (pic 1 and 2) and when i try to use them both in one object (as I wrote before) the objest turns black (pic.3). I really don`t understand it

i think its turning black because of the DGS materials...try doing it with a standard red material and a standard white material first
