Post Blurring Reflections Using MAX Materials

Hi Guys,

I was just pondering if it's possible to blur the reflections of a MAX/RayTrace material (NOT VRay materials and such)??

Let us know, thanks!!

if ur using an HDRI, simple option would be to blur that image in photoshop..
btw how are u setting up ur reflections coz i think usually "blur" is normally there?

Right now I use Raytraced materials, with a Fall-Off map in both the Diffuse and the Reflection slots. I've looked everywhere, and can't find a blur. Plus I haven't researched using HDRI yet :-P Right now though, I'd just prefer to know how to blur the reflections within the paint material.

what you're looking for is to enable the raytrace material's local antialiasing option... and choose the type to one that has values you can edit... that might be Fast Adaptive Anti-Aliaser or something like that. Edit the values for that in the local properties... there's some options in there.

Sorry I can't give any better details, 3dsmax is gonna be tied up for quite a while on a render

Hi Dr,

Do you have an example of what it is your trying to achieve? I had a little play with the standard max raytrace material but I'm not too sure if this is what you meant.

vyper, you're a champion!! Thanks for your help mate.

THat is sort of the effect I was after, however, I am wondering if it's possible to blur that noise in the reflection so it's smoother??

Hi Dr,
It might be possible to get the blur smoother, but I haven't figured that bit out. I did try again, but it has me baffled. I've attached the material to this post, see what you can come up with and if you get it cracked let me know how you did it.

PS. The size of the noise is scene scale dependent so it may look different in your scene. To change the blur level, I just changed the bump amount.

try to make a mask in your reflection slot, choose noise as mask and raytrace as map, you can blur the noise default is 0.1 or something like that, change it for a higher value.
