Render to texture

Hi all,
I'm new to 3DS and in my project I'd like to use a tool "Render to texture" to get shadow and specular maps. From Max reference and some tuts on the web I still have not the correct result. In perspective viewport I set a sky light, check Shadow cast, do UVW unwrap on selected object and in the Render to texture dialog with targeted object add Specular and Shadow maps. After rendering I get textures with a red mask but no shaded textures. Do I anything wrong or I'm really empty-brain? Can anyone help me, please? Using 3DSmax8.

I use Light Tracer....I tried even Radiosity but no effect. Then I tried to uncheck the Ray miss check option in Projection Options dialog but the output is black. Otherwise I still have solid red object. I tried to change Exposure Control in Environment but no effect again (I did it because photometric lights don't show in render output - so I thought it could help). I'm really hopeless.

Well, maybe my mistake or I did not understand well the tutorial. There was written to check Enabled in Projection Mapping section in Render to texture dialog and pick the projection. After unchecking the checkbox I got the result I wish.

So problem solved now? Anyhow, If I remember correctly, which I probably don't... enabling projection mapping only works if you have a projection modifier on the object, and/or you're trying to use one object to render to texture using another object, in the case of using a high-poly model to generate stuff for a low-poly model

multimediaman: probably the problem is solved thus I take up with it, although I'm still not sure I see the correct result. Anyway I thought it was as easy as in this link 3D Tutorials & CG Tutorials
Now I'm trying to follow Max Reference and make myself well-informed a little bit.
