no lines (edges?)

hey everyone,

im new to 3d max so i have been folowing some simple tutorials to get the hang of it, i have 3d max 9 and when i go to edit stuf i dont get the lines (edges im guessing) sory im not so clear ill got some screeshots to explane better.

how do i get the edges to show with out selecting them? it is hard to find then somethines and not being able to see them makes it hard to edit somethings! can someone please help me!?
