lighting problem in max

when i add a light to my scenes, normally you would see the direction of the light immediately on the object in the perspective view or whatever.

basically what happens when i add a light, nothing. its like the light isnt there.

the thing is when its rendered, the light works on the object fine. but it doesnt show in the perspective view.

is it something i pressed?

thanks in advance, yuriy.
