Just got Max 9

Hey guys, I haven't modeled since Max 5, and I was looking through a rim tutorial, and i was going good, I had gotten the tube and the cylinder all right and nice, and it came time to select the polys for the ends of the spokes and to bridge them, and I could only select one thing at a time, but in the dudes screenshot it showed he selected both objects at the same time and had the end polys all selected at the same time, I could only get one thing selected at a time, and when I hit the bridge button it only bridged the selected polys on that object, how do I select both the tube and the cylinder at the same time? Forgive me for being such a n00b, I lost all my ability. So please help me.

if they are seperate objects then use the attach,if they are on the same object use ctrl+ mouse click to choose the faces you want
