Thanks, I'm actaul looking at a couple of motherboards right now and possably within the next couple of months doing a complete upgraded from what I'm running at this moment.

But I think I'll go and buy two sticks a 1gig ram to push my memory to 3 gigs.

Thanks for all your help.

Believe me 1GB is minimum to just run the software... even if you have quadcore it can suck without the memory to deal with it...and the graphics card...

Well, I placed my order and in a week or so I should be recieve the parts.

going with a sli ready motherboard
4 gigs DDr2 (they they say you never can have two much ram)
2x xfx geforce 8600gt 512mb ddr3, pci exp cards ( running three screens, reason behind two cards)
and a intel core 2 2.20 ghz processorand swaping my hard drive for a sata drive

***not too sure if I should stick with xp or upgrade to vista.

after this I think I'll be in good shape.

roughly around $ 950CAD. Lucky my laptop came with Vista, so I'll be able to use the installation disk on my new machine.

oh, I just thought of something, by running 3dm 9, will that not make my machine run slower, instead of running version 7

I've be surfing the web all day at work trying to find a good setting for my vray, got one from cgarchitect.com and another from aversis.com. I hope I can get something right with them.

By the way would thing work more in my favour if I get a newer version from 3d max (like version 8 or 9)as well as vray 1.5?

Hello! Long time no see everyone!
Well, Im back up, and soon I will post my latest designproject for you all, a VOLVO plug-in hybrid only 2,5 - 3,0 long . (yes, it can turn 2,5 and 3,0 long)

So, Dimaknight, I had exactly the same issues as you a time a go. Your settings are not
screwed up if you want that size and quality.
I worked on a similar speced pc from 2005 - 2007, It is slow...... (Now - MacBookPro)
You said you had the highest resolution max could give you, WHY?? 4.000 * 4.000 or more? 300 dpi? Try out something friendlier for your machine 1440 * 900. 150dpi. for test..
Then put your settings to High. And use whatever other settings you want..

Do you have much lightning in your scene? More than 3 vray light planes?
3 hours with the specs on you pc are not far from the truth!
1gbRAM are not much for rendering!

3Dmax 8 and Vray 1.5 might increase your speed with a few seconds, but not that much..

Haukevinge - thanks for your reply, and hopefully in a couple of days I won't need to worry about running time.

Most of the time I'm rendering my images as 1024x1268 at 300 dpi. as fpr the planes, as for the lights I'm using 2 vray lights in stead of omni lights.

Actually now looking at using planes to give the studio effect but I'm having some trouble understanding vray lights at dome setting and vray light material planes. up to know mycars have came out alright, but I'm stil tring to find the right car body material and scene setup to may my car look as if it was real.

oh well, as long as the modeling is good whop carea about realism.

by the way does vray 1.5 work for max 7? Also I've read that some of you are saying not to use any hdri for your studio setup then what are you suppose to use for the material enviroment.
