Prepass before rendering

Could someone please tell me:

What is the mean for having pre-pass?
How do I turn it off?
Will it effect my final render and will it take longer to render when turned off?

Thanks

Pre passes is the standard for any render,i dont know all the details but thats the basic buildup of the render, the more quality settings the more pre passes there will be,it is required for every render.

just expanding on Catlins post, pre-passes are usually just elements like global illumination and caustic reflections being calculated...you can usually make them visible so you can see what theyre doing just by looking in the render settings...by default in mental ray and Vray theyre invisivble so you just see black while theyre calculating

Aprox. how long do it take you to render your image, say if you did it on a studio background on the highest setting. I did one last night on medium and it took approx 3 hours to do one on largest size available on 3dmax.

Also I want to try my hand on creating a 15 sec amination of my model, but if it's going to take 3 hours per frame, I'm not even going to attempt it then.

Well it depends on shaders but on my setup, it takes me about 1-2 mins to render on low quality and about 9-10 on very high settings
Im using just a main skylight and using a hdri for reflections.

Excuse the bloom effect that was done in photoshop but this is the render i done.

holy crap, I'm using mostly vray material but for the car body I'm using a shellec material.

My settings must be screwed upsome where if they take so long. ok given I don't have a dou core processor, but still with a fastest p4 with 1 gig ram it shouldn't take that long.

I've be surfing the web all day at work trying to find a good setting for my vray, got one from cgarchitect.com and another from aversis.com. I hope I can get something right with them.

By the way would thing work more in my favour if I get a newer version from 3d max (like version 8 or 9)as well as vray 1.5?
