Enough RAM? Too much polies in a scene?

I got 2 GB Ram and my CRK is over 4 million polies heavy, causing my pc to let 3ds crash even when I don't do anything.

So would that be it?

3dsmax 7 is old, newer versions could handle more polies and run on higher fps. also you need to upgrade your ram if it stays like that.

Well in my case I'm using 3ds max 9 and I already am searching for new RAM, I just hope the 1,25 extra (already use 2GB, and I'm on 32-bit) will make enough difference so I can at least finish the car...

Ok buddy alone RAM will not give anything to finish your car,sam thing happen with me regarding 8 million polygon running ,make use of Proxies if your data is getting much higher simul...use adaptive degradation to optimize your elements on viewports and use point helper from that dailog box..Hope this helps you out.

But would 1,25 extra GB RAM be enough to let me finish the car?

I might be thinking completely wrong but I'm not that computer technical.
I got as far as roughly 4,4 million polygons with 2GB RAM. That would be 2,2 million per GB, so if I add another 1,25 I would think I could be able to reach like 6 million before it'll crash again. Seeing how many polies there are now, and what still has to be done to my car, I would think I will have a finished car of 5,5 million, which would be below crashing limit...

Also I never heared of point helper, but I'll take a look at that AD and Proxies.

Also you can model by parts and merge all when you finish, or you can use the modifiers to optimize and reduce polygons. Sometimes it works with this type of troubles.
The best is the planning your work knowing your Pc limitations i supuse ...

It's not my pc specs or anything, it worked perfectly before.I even managed to open 17.5 million polygons scenery once.
