I'm mostly a high-poly modeler, but I will soon start a lowpoly to model a rFactor car. I only attempted lowpoly once so I know I will have lots to learn. Anyways, here some useful tools or tutorials :
- The bevelling script (shipped with Blender) allows you to bevel a given selection instead of the whole model.
- The following tutorial describe a convenient way of achieving smoothing groups, a feature that Blender does lack :
Blender 3D, custom models and UT3 smoothing (smooth groups) : KatsBits TUTORIALS. If you don't want to bevel like described there, the only other option is to split your mesh into different objects.
- I never use knife, because results aren't are predictable as I expect them to be. So I always subdivide my edges/faces either at hand, or using the loop subdivide feature (Ctrl+R)
- Some talented midpolys modeler here once posted a tutorial about using subsurf at level 1 and applying the modifier to add more details to a basic mesh. Can't put my hand back on it, but someone will come in handy for sure.
Feel free to post a WIP thread for your own projects, you'll have interesting feedback from our talented lowpoly artists. Most of them don't use Blender (nobody's perfect

) but the same tricks apply.
