I think the reason for the new impreza to be a hatch back is to compete with the other WRC cars, if you watch WRC, u will notice that most of the top cars, apart from Subaru, is a hatch back. I guess the hatch could save time when it comes to repairing the rear, since sedans have the end sticking out. The hatch could possibly save weight on the car. Thats my two cents though.

I love the STi but i also think that a redesigned body would be nice, but in a sedan, not hatch.
