Hey, I'm from South Africa ^_^
I might be the only person here who thinks this though... It's about time they killed off the CitiGolf badge. Recently Fiat re-released the old Uno and they still sell Opel/Vauxhall Corsa Lites as well.
The market here tends toward smaller vehicles, especially since the recent fuel price hikes. The VWs sell on the premise of their bullet-proof engines and the availability of parts is much higher than with other cars.
Don't get me wrong, we have supercars here too. The first CCX in the Southern hemisphere, there's a guy in my neighbourhood who collects classic Porsches. His neighbour has a Gallardo.
I actually thought this thread was about the Golf VI. Reason being, the 'new' Golf is a visual overhaul. The engines, including the abysmally ass-like 1.6, 1.6 and 2.0 are unchanged. THe 2.0l FSI remains, but frankly should be the baseline.
I'm not a fan of VW, I firmly believe they overcharge for the sort of kit you get in their cars. Not to mention their engines are truly appalling. Ford's doing the same thing with the UK Focus, it looks much better, but their cars never had trouble hitting highway speeds under load like the VWs do.
Anyway, regarding the CitiGolf range. I believe they're also produced in Brazil, but I could be wrong. You could get one in the US or Europe, but they don't meet safety standards and it's probably not a good idea. Build quality is high, but then they're simple cars. You're better off buying a Mazda2 for twice the price but easier access to services, a service plan and higher safety standards.
