"Light is right" contest

As I've seen in a Chapman quote in someone signature : "Add power, you'll go faster on straight lines. Remove weight, you'll go faster everywhere."

Here's the time for yet another contest : lightweight cars !

1/ Any car, any country, any brand, any year could enter, if and only if it's known to weight less than 960kg. Here're some ideas for you : Lotus Seven, Caterham CSR, Donkervoort D8, Lotus Elise or Exige, Caparo T1, Ariel Atom, Renault R5...

2/ The contest runs from right now until August, 31rd. One can enter at any moment until the timeline.

3/ Personal work only. No team work.

4/ No multiple work : one can submit only one car as final artwork. Feel free to change car during the timeframe if you want.

5/ Model should scratch made.

6/ No polycount limit, one can enter either low, mid or high poly. NURBs are also allowed. Use any software you can think of.

6bis/ Exterior modeling is required (!) Interior modeling is optionnal.

7/ Bitmap textures use is free. Use any size you want for any detail you can think of. Use procedural textures freely also, as much as you want.

8/ WIP must be shown in WIP forum, with title starting with "Light is right : ".

9/ Scene setup is your choice. Studio, HDRI, modelled environment : you do what you prefer.

10/ Final artwork must consist of two renders and two wireframes. One render to show the front, one render to show rear. The same goes for wireframes.

11/ Final artwork must be posted in this topic before November, 31th at 23:59:59 (11:59:59PM)

12/ Winner will be designated by a poll on the site.

13/ Sorry, but I've no prize to give (I mean, no one of my models is good enough to allow me to pretend give it as a reward ) Enter the contest to enjoy the contest !

Anyone interested ? Of course, I'm in it with an Ariel Atom II.

Here's a list of competitors :

I'm about to get some free time... and I would absolutely love to join this contest, except for the fact that it limits textures so much. I'm an avid believer that even the best models are incomplete without an equally good texture. Any chance of that limitation being changed?

Sure sounds interesting and I think I already got idea what to make. Does it matter if the car is mildly customised for racing purpose?

Nice to see the idea catches some interest ! I'm glad people like you think of entering the contest.

*RedStar* I'm sure you'll find the idea. I've even thought to put the limit at 800kg or 700kg but at 900kg there's enough room to allow people to bring in some really nice cars.

multimediaman, I can change the rule as follow : use of bitmap texture is limited to a single 512x512 map. Does it sound better to you ?

FlashG, you can customise the car provided the modifications doesn't get the car over the weight limit. I'm sure it will not be a problem, as it's pretty uncommon to add extra weight to a car to make a racer version

So interiors aren't needed for this contest then? 512x512 doesn't lead to very exciting texturing for interiors + exteriors + chassis. and if the engine compartment is in there, ... lol

multimediaman : as I almost never used textures, I didn't spot 512x512 won't be enough. I change the rules as follow : free texture usage.

About interior and exterior, feel free to model what you want / can. Of course, I think interior will be valuated during the poll used to choose the winner. For example, I'm afraid I can't avoid to model interior for my Ariel Atom II.

FlashG, nice choice ! Can't wait to see your work on it.

PS : Message to admin : can anyone would be kind enough to remove the 'proposal' word from the topic title ? As we start to have competitors, it's no longer a proposal but a real, running contest. Thanks by advance.

Can I really deny it to you ? As this one is really a beauty, I agree ! I change the weight limit to 953kg.

Now it's time for the Americans to understand this principle. Build cars with much less weight and proper suspension instead of leafsprings, for god's sake.

Sounds like a brilliant idea! Maybe we could conjure up some solution for a prize? Especially if if it gets more competitors! I would be willing to donate a few pounds to a prize if I entered

Anyway, I'm going to be away untill early/mid august, but if I find a car I'll give this competition a go when I get back

I might also give it a try, not 100% sure I have time but I will do my best.
My weapon of choice for this will be the Alfa-Romeo Giulia GTA. The normal Giulia weights in at about 1000kg but the GTA version was slimmed down to something like 750kg.

Hey Tom , listen man , i know this might be a little annoying , but can you push the limit a little bit further ? say 1180 Kg ? ---> it's the Koenigsegg CCX man , plz ....

if not , would it be ok if i remove some parts of the car so it weights 953 kg , say the interior and engine , those gotta be at least 350 Kg , right?
