All black material window question

Could somebody please tell me why my 3DS Max 7 material window looks like this and how to fix it?

Have you assigned a different renderer ?

if that's the case you might need to set the materials to be rendered by the standard in the assign render rollout, just unckeck the lock that links your production renderer and material editor renderer.
