Subpatch or not?

Hello .

I was wondering, how do you guys model cars? by using subD or just using smooth materials? or do you do both?
IMO its easyier to model the body with supD, but when you have to make a logo or indicator or somthing, it gets very hard (becouse everything have to be connected and made by 3 or 4 sides)

Im using Lightwave, but i guess everyone can answer this question exept Rhino users.

I recommend to do the M3 tutorial from LWG. It shows you how to model with polygons (and SubPatches), and in my opinion it's very clear
The only thing you need to skip is the first paragraph on setting up prints.

Setting up prints: http://www.smcars.net/forums/showpos...47&postcount=2
Poly modeling an M3: http://lwg3d.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14472

Good luck, and if you need help from a fellow LWer, just ask

Yea... thats what i thought, but if you had to make a rim for example, with somthing ingraved (if thats the word, cut into) you would be in trouble when using subD wouldent you?.

I find it hard to do that, the main body is easy enough though.

To do that with SubD's is really tough indeed.. But, excuse me for bringing up my own model, that's when bumpmaps come in handy

This is the wire:

This is without bumpmaps:

And this is with a bumpmap (ignore the tire, although this is done with a bumpmap too):

Here is my bumpmap (rescaled a LOT, original size was 1960×1960, TGA format):
