There is no answer to that question Im afraid .. since it depends on so many factors.

Which modelling technique do you prefer ? which kind of workflow do you like and find inituative ? and so on

Both are very capable programs .. but the are only tools that you must use your way.

i don't know which is the best way in modeling yet, since i'm new to 3ds max and lightwave.
i've used mesh modeling (correct me if i'm wrong), where i start with plane and extrude and weld stuff. i didn't know about any other techniques where i use something else.

i find 3ds max very friendly while lightwave has complex interface.

If you want to get a job doing 3D then you are probably better off using 3DS Max because it has a wider acceptance (someone correct me if i'm wrong).

re:

I use Lightwave For me it's the other way around,

Lightwave = Easy Simple Interface
3dsmax = Complex Quirky Interface that takes time to get used to...

I have taught many people to model in Lightwave in less than 5 minutes over the net! That's how easy it is...but most people use Max to import their models into games...Not sure if Lightwave can do that...never tried...

Both programs will get the job done...

I vote for LW...
I 'use' it myself too
I used max one or two times, but it works very complicated..
So I prefer LW

3DS MAX 5 vs LIGHTWAVE 7

Hi !

Both programs have their strenghts and waekneses so just choose one which suits your worklfow. I prefer Lw but i've seen many great things from guys use MAX so no difference there. It's not "tool" what makes art it's Artist .

But if you check bang for buck then MAX doesn't have chance 'coz LW is half of MAX price and you have ALL in box (no need for plugins for anything).

Also my question is why do you ask about LW7 vs MAX 5 when both programs have their current versions in LW 7.5 and MAX 6 ??
