About wheel design...

Hey fr my "bus" project, I want to use some nice shiny rims for it, and I found a picture that resembles the rims I want to do...

http://www.freightliner.mb.ca/assets/images/F23134b.JPG

However, as you notice on the front rim, the outer holes are diamond shaped... for my rims, I want actual circles, not diamonds... I've experimented with a rim, and I managed to do one that looks ok, however with mesh smooth, the circles gibble up a bit. I used an NGON with 6 sides for the holes. Do you think thats too many points and it's simply not rounding it enough? I cant show a picture of what it's doing for a while until I can get on my computer again, but for the principle, what would you suggest? An NGON with fewer sides? Or more? or... not using an NGON at all?

Yeah, the rim is a basic lathed shape, them converted to a mesh, then I make the NGONs and position them around the rim, and "compound join" them... and I think they just have too many points... anyways, any tips you have if you understand what I'm saying would be great... guesses are welcome too, heh.

Dug into my archives, as I had something that looks similar to what you're wanting just sitting around. Hopefully the screen capture gives you an idea of what kind of topography to work with. In my case the circles were done with 16 edges (derived from default cyl), but you may even be able to get away with 6 or 8. It's just a matter of having that loop of edges around the hole to help control the smoothing.
