In the material editor, click new material, add brazil chrome and play around with the filter colour, and glossy reflections.

i want to help but.. what is a "clay" effect

and about teh chrome , check this place http://www.danielbuck.net/ there is a great tut about making chrome

but like teh guy always say, the chrome will just look good with a good scene, then you will need a nice hdri pic like you said lol
so check this post http://smcars.nd4spdworld.com/forum/...pic.php?t=7019
scott explain well how to use them in a good way i think

but all those etting are for render in 3dmax without brazil.. but mabye it work good with brazil aswell

For a clay render, just have a skylight, and give all the objects in the scene a neutral grey colour and render.

there is an option in the render dialog under the heading "render pass control" from there enable pass control, then choose "white plaster" from global material replacement

hope this helps
