grrr! what happend to my 3dsmax settings!!!

using 3dsmax 6. sorry for writing so long, but i wanted to make sure the problem was clear.

im working on my first car (nissan 350z) and i got into a little bit of a tough spot with my vertices, so i decided to delete a few and start a section over. when i went to clone an edge by moving it while holding 'shift', it doesnt make a clone anymore. nothing gets created. i then tried just moving a single vertice, and everything in my scene has become constrained extremly weird! id go to move a vertice just using the y axis and the vertice would move down, but then it would get to a certain point and bank and start moving along the x axis. did i hit a key or something that f'd up my scene or what? first time this has ever happened

i hope this is an easy fix cause im nearly done make the body of the car and i would hate to have to trash it. if u still need more description or other info. of the problem id be more than happy to post more. i could possibly make a video of the problem if someone can point me in the right direction to finding a program to capture what i do in 3dsmax.

here is an example. in this picture, i tried dragging the circled vertice towards the other half of the car in order to connect it, but it wont move any further then it is right now. i can drag it the other direction, but i cant go towards the other half. maybe that helps

you hit the nail on the head with the constraints..

unfortunately I'm not quite familiar enough with max 6 (and/or 5) to direct you to the axis constraints configuration so you can turn them off... but at least you know now to look for axis constraints

Select the object that has the problem and go to the modify panel. Under the Edit Geometry rollout, you'll see a drop-down menu beside the word 'Constraints'. Select None.

Maybe you enabled the Snap option with the "S" key?
