ubuntu?

I just installed Ubuntu on my PC yesterday, so far I'm happy with it.

I don't think it will ever replace my Windows (because I need 3DSM and Photoshop..) but nonetheless, it's really great.

Anyone here have it installed?

That I'm not sure about. I'm still learning it. There are ways to get certain Windows programs to be installed, but I don't know them yet.

Hoping that someone here will know more about it, and maybe tell me a few tricks of the trade.

I like this because my good PC's motherboard died, so I'm using an old PC and Ubuntu runs 100x faster than Windows does.

it could also be because Windows now-a-day has so much crap and 3rd party programs on them from the PC manufacturer....

if i was confident in my computer saviness i'd attempt to run a new OS

There are a number of ways to run Windows programs, including Photoshop, on Linux.

VMWare is a good one.

I'm a long-time Linux user. Ubuntu served me pretty well for years (I say "served", because I moved to OSX86 a few weeks ago)

As it's a completely different OS from Windows, just forget all your Windows software. Of course, virtualisation can be of help, like DarkOverlord said. But the overhead is really high : you have to run a Windows copy on top of your Linux install. For more information about virtualization if you've never heard of that : Virtualization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So, think to all the software available for free on your future Linux box : Blender for 3D (a few members here at SMC already proved it's not a toy ), Gimp for 2D, and much more.

To be honest, the only thing you'll have to forgive will be all your PC games. That's the reason why I brought a PS2 some years ago.

Feel free to ask any Linux or Ubuntu related question. I (and others I'm sure) will try to answer efficiently.
