Getting a new computer

Well, I just need a much faster computer than the current one as fast as possible cause you propably can't even imagine thet someone that works with 3D graphics can use something like that. So here are my current specs:

CPU: Intel Celeron III Coppermine 1 GHz ( now it's running at 1,32 GHz, and a higer o/c isn't possible with my motherboard )
Motherboard: Shuttle AV18 with VIA Apollo Pro133A chipset
RAM: 768 MB SDRAM ( I had 896 MB but one of my modules broke and I couldn't even boot my PC so I had to remove it. )
Graphic card: It's also broken, only thing that works on it currently is 2,5 MB of memory, so even playing games from 8 years ago is impossible so as the installing of any DirectX version.
HDD: I think it's the only thing that works well in my PC, it's an 80 GB samsung.

So now you should understand why I need a new PC and why I'm so mad about this one.
And here is what i think would be the best to buy at the moment:

Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi3 ( $2400 )

CPU: Intel Centrino Duo T7700 ( 2x 2,2 GHz )
Memory: 2 GB DDR2 Dual Channel @ 667 MHz
GPU: Dual nVidia GeForce 8600M GT in SLi
HDD: 2x 160 GB @ 5400 RPM
Optical Device: HD DVD Reader, DVD Multi drive
Screen: 17" WSXGA+ ( 1680x1050 )

It is a Hi-End laptop ans here are some reasons why I would choose it:
- I think it's best Price/Quality product on the laptop market.
- I know that 7950's GTX are faster but I want 8600M GT cause they've got DX 10 anc I think that they should be able to handel it when there are two of them. And I want DX 10 cause I want to be able to play such games as Crysis on full settings.
- And I think that a laptop in such configuration has some nice render capabilities.
- Very long battery life for such laptop ( about 2.5h )

And I want this laptop instead of a PC cause I know I could get a better PC system for the same price but than without any screen or any other cool features that improves gaming quality. And what's the point of buying a PC with a Quad Core and dual 8800 GT if you can't use that power ?

But anyway, if i had to buy a PC than I would go for a HP BlackBird 002 in a configuration for about $5000 with a nice 24" WideScreen.

And now I've got one problem left, wich is very important: What do you think about Windows Vista Ultimate ? Hare's what I think:

I had vista two weeks before it came out already. I wasn't running it on my PC cause it was and still is a way toooo slooooow so i've just tested it on another PC. I liked the aero interface very much but here are some reasons why I'm even affraid to use vista on my own computer: It isn't compatible with almost every game wich was designed for windows XP, I know that cause I had to find and install vista patches for much games on my friends PC cause he wasn't able to do this on himself The second thing I don't like for sure is the fact that vista extremly slows down your pc, my friend bought his PC two months ago,it came with Vista Home Premium and it has a C2D E6600 CPU and a GeForce 7950 GT GPU in it. And if even he, someone who don't know anything about computers could notice that his PC was much slowed down since he bought it than I start to worry. But this is not a problem. I mean, I can format the HDD and install XP on it easily but here is main problem:

Will there ever appear a version of DirectX 10 for windows XP ? Cause whats the point of getting two DX10 capable GPUs if you can't run it anyway and I would stay as far from vista as possible. Cause now it seems like microsoft knows that people don't like their new o/s and tries to force them to use it by stopping develop any updates for XP. I wonder, how much money does a PC Producer get from M$ for writing on ther site: THEIR_BRAND_NAME recommends Windows Vista. Cause I think that any human who's in computer business and can use his brain wouldn't ever recommend it as it is now.

So I would appreciate your mening about the system configurations above and operating systems.
BTW. I ain't gonna buy a new computer before april 2008 anyway so I've got some time to think about it.

buying a laptop for performance reasons, so to speak for gaming and such, is definately not something i would do. you will get way better performance in a desktop machine for the same money. i would buy a laptop because, let's say, i would be using it for work and i would have to be able to take it around with me.

but then again it's your money your spending...

well then don't buy the quad core yet... i'm sure the prices will drop until the time you said, so have a look then... planning half a year in advance doesn't really make much sense imo. also take a look at the Samsung SyncMaster 226BW, here in germany they are **** cheap but still really good.

TrustedReviews - Samsung SyncMaster 226BW

but this is just an example... you can still get a very good machine for your budget if calculate the monitor too.

but i will say this again. planning a half year in advance as to what you will buy then is just pointless... the prices will change a LOT until then, so just wait until you have the money at hand and then get some proper advice

I know about samsung screens cause my frient bought one for himself for about € 230 and that's cheap for such screen.

The other reason why I could use a laptop is couse I'm also a DJ. So if I had a laptop it would be much easier for me to work. I also travell a lot. I mean, my family lives in Poland but I moved to Belgium. I'm visiting poland 3 or 4 times a year so I'm not home for about 1/3 of a year and than I couldn't use my PC either.

I agree with all that you're saying but the price of this laptop will drop til than also. So the proportion of what you can get for the same in april 2008 stays the same.

And I know that if I would buy a PC it would cost less or be better and it would be modular so I can upgrade some parts if I need to.

But you're right. Thinking about it now isn't a vary good idea. And definitly if the peryn processors and the new G92 GPUs have to come out, cause this will make everything that's on the market now extremely cheaper or the prices for the new products would be much too high for most od the people to buy it...

yeah, as far as insane performance, a desktop will be your best bet... i currently have a Toshiba Satellite for work with a 17" screen, it does well, but when I have AutoCad and 3D Max running it def bogs down.

I have the Pentium Dual Core, running Windows Vista, I don't have the particulars of my comp in front of me, but it's an all around good system...
