when you load an image plane, its mapped to the camera, so what happend was the camera/image plane was infront of the grid, try moving the camera and the center x/y/z,

and the specs of youre box are fine ive run maya on less, though might want to get a bigger psu, 550W maby

This is a problem i have to and sometimes the blueprint appears in front of the grid and sometimes behind. It can’t be the camera position because I can start modelling without problem and the settings is the same so I think it’s a bug.
I think the best solution is to create 4 polygon planes with textures of the imageplanes. Then you set width and height in the channel box.

One tip:
Click the color gain colorbox to set the color and use the eyefill dropper to take color information from your background color. Now the white color on the blueprint should have the same color that your background.

So how do you set the image planes to the right size.........i mean, you can't just make squares....when i do it in photoshop, i know the cm size of all of the references, but in maya, its just maya units.
thanks

after a long time of maya experience, when ever anyone runs to a problem like this, just throw out your preferences and restart maya. it will re create the preferences.

if you create custom shelves and want to keep them, then leave that file in preferences folder.
