welcome to smcars!

In the polygon tab there is a smooth button which you can use to smooth it, first bevel the sharp edges, than smooth

next to the smooth button is the subdiv, thats more for organic modeling.

modify>convert>polygons to subdivs

you can go to highend3d.com and get a hotkey script that toggles poly to subdiv while you hold down a key, then it converts back to polys on release. I forget the name of it, but it's one of the popular files. VERY handy

subd's work smoother on a low end pc than poly smooth.

sometimes i never even use any smoothing... i just use soften edge.

you can find that under normals in polygon section.

if you have proper edges beveled and correct poly flow, the soften edge works well as i use that for commercial companies instead of poly smooth or subds.
