Are you asking about how to get sharp lines?

Well since your poly modeling to get a sharp line you need to add more polies next to each other. THe way smoothing works is the further away 2 objects are the less sharp it will be because what smoothing does it adds lets say 2x more rows on polies in between ur gaps. If your gaps are small then all thsoe polies are added and play a role in making a area sharp. if you have a big gap then they play a role in making it nice and round.

For the split polygon tool try the first two attached pics

Also, try the split edge ring tool (I think it's a different name if you are using maya 8 ) and try using it in either absolute or relative mode in the tool settings.

If you need a sharp line on the smoothed version, then you might need to add a third line. That should make it very sharp.

If you're wanting to adjust a series of cuts, there are several ways to do this. For one, you could curve snap ( hold "C" and middle-mouse nudge on the edge you want to move along) to an edge in-between the two lines and move it closer. You could also scale down the edges that are perpendicular to the line you a want to create on the model (see attached pic).

You coud also try selecting the series of edges you want to make sharper, and bevel them. Then adjust the bevel offset in the channel box on the right side of the screen.

Another way would be the poly crease tool if you are using a smooth proxy. (http://www.smcars.net/forums/work-pr...50z#post157029) Select the edges to sharpen, enable the tool, go to the smoothed version, and then middle mouse drag left and right across the screen to sharpen or soften a corner. However, I don't recommend this method, as it can cause issues with the normals.

If you need specific help, try attaching a pic of what you are wanting to do to you're model and a wireframe screengrab.

just select the edges you want to make sharper, and use the Bevel tool under Edit Mesh.
Its exactly the same as chamfering in max.

ps. dont forget to weld tri's on ends after beveling.
