Cool Weekly Write-Up - 02/07/2008

Greeting all and welcome to an ever-so-slightly late Write-Up.

This week's Write-Up packs an Interview, so small house-keeping tid-bits and as always, the SMC Usuals to finish it off.

-------------------------

A Contest A Brewin'...

For those of you eager to jump on and straddle another SMC Contest into submission will be keen to know that a brand new one is in the works. THis one will be decided upon by the SMC Higher-Ups, so we hope you like our lil' concoction

Interview...

This month's Interview has been checked for Taurus spam and I'm sorry to say, it failed the test miserably... Ladies, gentlemen and boring people who like boring things, I present to you in all his neutral glory, multimediaman...

------------------------- Interview: multimediaman -------------------------
You, Summarised...

Name (just first): David

Alias: Multimediaman, mmm, m3, m³, 3m, or as some have used, just M

Age:25

Location:USA - Texas (near Dallas)

Qualifications (if any):For what, a hypothetical 3D job? I guess you could say:

6 years of using 3ds max, either version 4.2 or 7, but always 3ds max, and photoshop. High knowledge of UVW Unwrap and model texturing, with a strong emphasis on low poly modeling quality. Have worked on a videogame, which unfortunately never made it to final stages...

Current Job:I've got no job other than looking for a job. I'm hoping that an opportunity in the video game environment artist will arise... or vehicle modeling, even texturing

-------------------------

Like To Get To Know You Well...

What made you get into digital art?Ahh the days of the Sega Saturn. Games were 3D now, and it was just a fact of life. I was reading a guide book for tomb raider, and noticed in their "Making of:" section, they mentioned the program used for the 3d models was "3d studio" ... I looked into it on the internet though, but was only able to find that the program was hopelessly out of my budget reach.

However in the playstation days of Gran Turismo, I was convinced that this was what I wanted to do. So from then on my path in life was to go to the Art Institute of Dallas and persue a 3d career.

What do you like most about this field?Well, it's the same magnetic attraction that draws people into scale modeling... model railroads, and possibly even war re-enactments. There's no better feeling than recreating a model of something. It's even better than scale modeling when you think of it, because with proper scene setup, you won't run into scale issues, you never have to spend hundreds of dollars on the models, people, cars, trees, foliage, and paints... and you can animate everything!

Explain what your current job entails, and why you like it:My current job is simply sitting in front of my computer, and scouring the internet for all the companies I can find, sending them applications, and then waiting for the next day to come so I can send them a follow-up email. And even then the chances of actually hearing so much as a peep from them seems highly rare... and then the next thing my job entails would be wondering if they actually are hiring, and just haven't updated their website... or wondering why there's no response... and pondering new ways to follow up an application that hasn't received any response without seeming like some sort of obsessed freak who gets their kicks from harassing game employers. Needless to say, I hate my current "job"

What do you see yourself working as in 10 years?Definitely something related to video gaming. I'm perfectly convinced that I could be doing 3d art for 10 years in a row... but there may be a chance I would try to expand my horizons at the company, and move from 3d art to sound production, or a more management-based position, if said managing would still leave plenty of time for me to make 3d artwork

What is your dream company in this field that you would want to work for, and why? That company is now, and probably always will be Rockstar North. The country they're in suits me just fine, and the style of Grand Theft Auto is pretty much a summation of the kind of 3d artwork, texturing, audio, etc. that I'd like to create.

If not Rockstar, than my "dream company" would be anyone who frequently creates games dealing with outdoor environments which are made to be believable in current time. A historical game that doesn't involve war would be okay, but the more in the future the game is the less it appeals to me. I'd rather not model something that by today's standards doesn't even make sense.

-------------------------

Wrapping You Up...

What are your other hobbies/interests?Well, I like cars, of course... if I had all the money I want, I'd probably do nothing other than restore random traffic cars. Because seeing a 1981 Dodge Aries in perfect showroom condition is exhillerating. Same with a '91 Ford Taurus, or many other early 90's cars. How about a '75 buick riviera, anyone?

I also like scale models, bicycling, and if I'd ever have the chance to, I'd like camping.

I love taking road trips and vacations... and going back to the whole infinite money thing, I'd probably go all over the country just taking texture pictures and all...

Then I've been wanting to get into motorcycles... Been eying the Kawasaki Ninja 250R or 500R, whichever fits me better, though I haven't got near enough money to start that dream off yet, so haven't bothered testing any yet.

And perhaps being a pilot would be pretty cool too. I'd kinda like to be able to fly a Cessna 172 around

And last but not least, since this is a 3D car-related forum, what is your dream car, and why?Man alive there's just so many dream cars of mine. Not sure how I can pick just one

Right now, my dream garage would include my current car, an '04 subaru impreza outback sport wagon, and also the kawasaki ninja motorcycle, plus an '07 Subaru Impreza WRX STi. With no money limit, it would have a porsche 928 in it, as well as a Jaguar XJ220, and a honda nsx.

Then my dream garage's "restoration corner", featuring vehicles I've restored, or are working to restore to showroom quality.... which would include all of the following:

Saturn's S-Series from 1991, and all of them from 1996. This includes the SC1 and SC2, SW1 and SW2, and SL1 and SL2.

Ford's Taurus lineup, with sedans and wagons of: 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, and 2005.

Fords : '92 Tempo, '92 Thunderbird, '93 mustang (base model), '89, '87, 84, & '78 thunderbird, '89 Mustang, '86 mustang, '82 Mustang, '90 probe, '91 Lincoln Town Car

Chevrolets/GM's : '82 Citation slantback coupe, '88 caprice, '91 celebrity, '91 Lumina, '91 Lumina APV, '91 beretta, '95 Lumina, '85, '91, '98, '03 camaros, '84 Pontiac Fiero 2m4, '91 Pontiac Grand Am, '95 Pontiac Grand Am, '98 Pontiac Grand am, '90 pontiac grand prix, '91 pontiac grand prix GTP, '04 Pontiac Grand Prix, '03 Buick Century, '75 Buick Riviera, '96 Buick Roadmaster Wagon (with wood paneling), '85 Cadillac Seville

Dodge: '81, 85, and 89 Dodge Aries, '94, '97, and '01 Intrepid, '00 Stratus '90 Shadow, '87 Dodge Diplomat, '87 Chrysler New Yorker 5th Ave.

There's countless others... but I've already filled up a multi-level parking garage... so I'll call that enough for now

------------------------- END Interview: multimediaman -------------------------

The above and past Interviews can be browsed here.

-------------------------

Congratulations for making it through this fairly epic Write-Up brought to you by SMC and our Interviewee, MMM. See y'all back here next Monday night for another one!!
