University/College questions

Well Im getting close to deciding courses for my 4th year in high school And I have a question about the course selection in University/College. I was wondering if anyone here can help me I live in Canada so if you live in North America you might be able to help me out. My question is, How do you go about selecting what courses for your first undergrad year and which courses would help you out with what you want to do in the future. My guidance counsellor is the dumbest fatass in the world and was no help. He basically said that I must choose about 5 courses to which all fall under what you wanna do in the future. Well I want to go into the field of Computer Engineering. I was looking up some Universities in my area and I found that University of Toronto, very popular and very hard to get into has about 20 courses that fall into the Computer science/Engineering field. I need to know which courses will I need to boost nmy knowledge and get me a job in the future. Their are some that I obviously wont take like Computer Science since it is a graduate program. If anyone has any help or info, sites, online PDF's anything that can help or from your experience please reply, My brain is going to overheat soon.

Well, all i did was go on there site, look up the programs you are interested in and it tells you what you need to get in, what courses you need. I made sure I had them all and got into every college i applied for, but chose fanshawe in london, ont.

University/College questions

If you're into computer science, for first few semesters you'll be basically taking required courses. McGill's computer science (my uni) has a handbook with a possible "stream" - http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/undergraduate/handbook.pdf page 11

university of toronto should have something similar, so try to find it.
i found this - http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/DCS/Underg...lum/prereq.pdf

keep in mind that in quebec, undergrad program is 3 years not 4.

I find that required courses are by far the hardest - 100, 200 and 300 level sometimes have up to 200 students and are designed to fail unworthy students. my gpa was low during first 3 semesters, but then last 3 semesters when i'm taking 400/500 level courses my gpa skyrocketed.
So for the first few semesters dont worry so much, you'll be taking required (or 'core') courses, so theres not much to choose. Also most of the people take some sort of 'bull****' courses outside of the program, since you need some of those.

One thing i can say - take many project courses, the look awesome on your CV. And take graphics courses, cause university of toronto has a good graphics lab.

btw,
science > engineering
computer science > computer engineering

dont know about computer sciences or what youll need for that degree, but if i were you i would take the general ed classes first. just incase you decide to change your major it will be easier to switch. my best friend was in computer science and he said that he did nothing but homework and sit in front of the computer. he said his scocial life was kinda gone, lol. he switched out of computer science cause he couldnt take it. that may be just him though.
