what is the difference between Indy cars and F1 cars?

When you say Indy cars I assume you mean CART/Champ cars and not IRL.

F1 cars are smaller all around, providing better acceleration, handling, and braking. CART cars have a higher top speed.

F1 cars use 3000cc V10 engines where CART now all use 750bhp Ford V8's.
F1 bhp are kept under wraps but BMW and Ferrari's 2004 season engines are rumored to be 900bhp+.

F1 cars use paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, one for "Shift up" and one for "Shift down". This is called a sequential gearbox as there is no way to skip a gear although you can move through the gears very quickly. CART cars have a gearstick. Push forward to shift down and pull backward to shift up. A clutch is used only for downshifting.
