First Camera (1.5mb pics, sry 56kers)

Just got the mother of all Christmas gifts (for me at least), a Nikon D50. I've been playing with it all day and decided to share my best pics. Sorry about the large size, but I wanted to post the background sized version. I'll replace them with a smaller size tomorrow if there are complaints.

You should take some b/w pictures during daylight of those enourmous buildings there, would definately make them look great.
Nice pictures!

One question though, these aren't fully scaled pics, right? Since these are 1600×1200.. That's a 2.0 Megapixel camera then. Not the best choice if it's brand new (no offense)
If not, change the settings, would be a waste of money if you don't use it to the limit

Re: First Camera (1.5mb pics, sry 56kers)

Nice pics indeed, ithackston and VERY nice Christmas gift as well!
I use a Nikon D70 ( not a gift... ) and love it dearly.

You should ask for a tripod as a Newyear present also, then you can make stunningly sharp night shots. ( pity you didn' t have one when taking that first pic )

Also, set your camera at RAW+JPEG mode and highest quality. That way you can use the JPEG' s for quick review and use the RAW- files for archival and photomanipulation.
Since this is a 6 MegaPixel camera, you' ll love what yoou can do with it.
Then save the 6Mp RAW- files as TIFF and resize ( if needed ) a copy and save it as a JPEG file for use on the web.
Your file will be smaller and of better quality.

I sharpened and resaved your " rusty nut " picture. It is much smaller now ( in filesize ) but looks great.
Also, try experimenting with DOF ( depth of field ) to get the focus ok. http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html and http://www.photonhead.com/simcam/shutteraperture.php can help here.

Good luck,

Peter
( I' ll remove the image if you want me to, ofcouse )

Re: First Camera (1.5mb pics, sry 56kers)

thanks for the complements. no NE, i scaled and photoshoped for background use.

pete, i didn't know you could get the pics in a raw format. ill have to try that.

i'm going to try and borrow my friend's underwater housing for his D50 for surfing today. hopefully he'll trust me so i can post some nice pics, the surf has been incredible lately.

edit: oh yeah, i'm going to buy the tripod, seeing as i've just gotten the nicest gift i've ever recieved

Re: First Camera (1.5mb pics, sry 56kers)

no c&c? great sunset tonight, but I wasn't able to get to the camera until it was almost gone.

i just used shadow/highlight on the darker ones, and used a quick branding script to get them down to size quickly (i'm too lazy to make another script without the words at the bottom)

and no, my friend wouldn't let me borrow the underwater housing (cant say i blame him, i've been doing this for a day)

That rusty nut picture is amazing, just beautiful. The skyline is pretty awesome too but the house in the foreground ruins its majesty. What city is that?

The first shot is pretty cool... For me it has to much noise because of your high ISO. Also it looks to me that you haven't used a tripod, which has caused slight motion blur on the lights.

I would also suggest that you crop out the bottom section (the house) and clone out the electrial cable and that would make a sweet shot
