I haven't visited this place since I think 2005 - I do take some photos - see airliners.net (Aviation Photos: Chris P Denton)
I like going out with the camera - but it's difficult these days when people see you walking about with a large heavy camera and suspect that you are a terrorist or some other kind of criminal. ![]() Latest photo: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Singa...841/1444148/L/ - Singapore Airline's 3rd A380, 9V-SKC |

No, not quite - but some people get a bit hysterical when they see someone carrying around a camera with a large looking lens.
Not that mine is so large, it's just a mid-range Nikon (with battery grip) and a 300mm Nikkor prime.. Fairly modest compared to some with their new D300s or D3s with 500 or 600mm AF-I or AF-S lenses. But the 300mm is a good lens - superb optics, but slow to focus (non AF-S/AF-I - it uses the focusing from the camera). It's a real pain if you happen to get it out of focus (ie, the subject moves suddenly, or you get blown by wind. Here is one from last year on my way over to Seattle: http://www.racerplanet.com/photoplog..._ual_wing2.jpg Interesting story behind this - all looks calm, but the plane itself, a UAL B747-400 had technical problems. One engine lost oil pressure, they shut it down and we diverted to PHNL. Out of Sydney, the flight was very rough - the clouds were quite high as well, and at FL300, we only just skimmed over the top of most of them, so it was quite a choppy flight for a long while. I don't mind it though, I love flying. ![]() Nothing prepared me for how hot and humid Honolulu is, even at 4:15am in the morning. And the place is so slow paced. We ended up leaving at about 11:30am, by that time everyone was pretty looking like walking dead. But the surly and abrupt TSA people lived up to all the expectations. ![]() One more for now: http://www.racerplanet.com/photoplog...irstflight.jpg 1st ever A380 commercial flight - Singapore to Sydney, last year. The media were everywhere, I've never seen such a chaos. About 3 hours earlier, I got the 500mm lens, this was my first attempt with it - jostled by crowds of people. The A380 now is a non-event, they fly in and out at least one per day. We have not only Singapore's A380's, but the prototypes from Airbus as well coming in and out of Sydney, and next month, Qantas' first will arrive. One of my other favourites from a while back is this: http://www.racerplanet.com/photoplog...52_smaller.jpg Pity I had to compress this a lot, the sharpness goes badly. I can actually see my office building in the background - the small one to the right of Ernst & Young. Our 26 floor building looks small in comparison. http://www.racerplanet.com/photoplog..._8184_copy.jpg That's from the same set of images as the Jetstar A330 on my airliners.net collection. This is the better of the two - a nicer angle and shot, the winglets aren't cutting out the logo. ![]() Latest photo: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Singa...841/1444148/L/ - Singapore Airline's 3rd A380, 9V-SKC |

nice pictures, cpd... I've been meaning to take my camera out there and get some good airplane reference + texture shots, but it's quite hard getting a good distance from the airport to have them fly overhead at good angles (the textures I'm aiming for would be the direct underside of the plane, and perhaps one showing the windows nicely
got any cessna 172 pix? ![]() ![]()

C172? Hmm, I've never tried to photograph one. Don't see many of them around Sydney. Not many of them still fly around after the fuel crisis we had a while back that put a lot of small plane operators out of business.
The majority of the smaller private planes I see are: - Gulfstream G-IV (450) - Gulfsteam G-V (550) - Cessna Citation / Citation X - Dassault Falcon 900 / 2000 (3 engine / 2 engine respectively) - Bombardier Global XRS The larger private planes: - Airbus A319 "ACJ" - Boeing Business Jet 1 / 2. - Boeing 747-200B (USA) - Boeing 747-400 (Japan 1 / Japan 2). - Boeing 757 - Boeing MD11/ER (HZ-AFAS - HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud) We had Japan 1 and 2 in together a few weeks back, along with a USA Gulfstream G-V (60500). I watched the USA G-V go, noting it on ACARS where it was listed simply as 60500. I've never seen a jet (other than our 'fast-jet' Hornets and Pigs) reach 39,000ft so quickly. It was sort of abeam Myall Lakes National Park and already at FL390. Biggest problem with the little planes is getting close enough to photograph them properly. It's just about impossible to get right underneath them when they are low enough. I don't really have any top quality short lenses in my collection, only longer telephotos. The longer ones are not helpful with little planes - it's too easy for them to get blurred with heat haze. For a plane, you could probably just as easily Photoshop it - then do a texture bake in 3dsmax or Maya. It'd be a lot easier. ![]() Latest photo: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Singa...841/1444148/L/ - Singapore Airline's 3rd A380, 9V-SKC |

Added another to my a.net collection. A Singapore A380, the first time I've snapped one without a lot of heat-haze. I'm still waiting to catch the Qantas A380 (Nancy-Bird Walton). I've seen it from a distance twice already, but not up-close, and never when I've had a camera ready. I was out the other Sunday, saw the Singapore A380, then later, driving back - noticed a very, very big red and white plane, it was, you guessed it.. ![]() Hopefully that will change soon. ![]() ![]() Latest photo: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Singa...841/1444148/L/ - Singapore Airline's 3rd A380, 9V-SKC Last edited by cpd : 10-12-2008 at 09:53 PM. |

2 more in my collection:
Jetstar Airbus A330-202 VH-EBA (used to be Qantas VH-EBA) Photos: Airbus A330-202 Aircraft Pictures | Airliners.net Wunala Dreaming - Qantas 747-438/ER (Extended Range) Photos: Boeing 747-438/ER Aircraft Pictures | Airliners.net The A330 is one I offered to photograph for someone else who was seeing off a family member who was leaving on an overseas trip. The Qantas 747, well, just look at it - why wouldn't you want to photograph it! Surely must be the most famous Boeing 747-400. ![]() I still have not managed to photograph the Qantas A380-842 yet. ![]() Latest photo: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Singa...841/1444148/L/ - Singapore Airline's 3rd A380, 9V-SKC |
