here are some renders of my concept that i made in zmod a while ago and converted to max today.
i'm having tough time with smoothing groups (just have no idea how to use.make them) so i made faceted clay, simple renders.

Hey this is kinda cool!

About that smoothing group problem do this:

0. Select the part you want to smooth
[/edit]
1. Change to faces level
2. Select all faces
3. On the right there is the tool panel, scroll down until you see the smoothing groups part
4. Click on "1" there to asign the faces you selected to that group.
5. Now select the same edges that you used when you detached them in Zmod! Instead of detaching and reattaching them, you simply click the button with "2" on it! As simple as that!
