    Dodge Challenger SRT8 in real-time 3D viewer

The Gallardo is nearly done but for a special purpose I need another vehicle. It's the Dodge Challenger SRT8. One of the best revived cars at all.

This time I want to present the project in real-time. A plugin is required but allows smooth 3d art in your browser then. Click the link below to start the 3d model viewer. Of course there might be problems with very slow computers.

Click for interactive 3D model viewer 6MB

What you see is the raw body without any details. In many cases I had to reshape the surfaces for a perfect shading again and again and it would make no sense to always redo the details before the body is final.
The polycount is not worth a mention since it has a lot of potential to get optimized. It's moving around 40.000 tris for the body and 20.000 tris for the wheels. SSAO is temporarily active and might cost some frames. This is going to be deactivated later.

I want to open the hood, the trunk and the doors. For the exterior a low detailed cockpit is intended. A high detailed cockpit comes for the first person view. My next objective is the 6.1l HEMI 425hp engine with openable hood. This car was very tricky because the existing prints are very inaccurate.

Nice to see more people using unitys webplayer. The mesh is looking clean, cant spot any bumps. The polycount is pretty high but I cant see any edges and you said theres space for optimizations, so great work!

Wow.... just WOW! Really good car man. Love you used Unity3D for this! I worked with the program as well, but strictly for creating games. Your way of using it to show off your project is really creative. Props for that!

Thanks. Unity is a cool environment indeed to show wip stuff.

I have added some real interactivity with color switch for the body, decals, rims and taillights. You can also view a closeup of the rim. The GUI is cobbled together so please disregard the rough implementation .

That looks amazing. There is 2 effects that you do really well. The Fresnel on the body and the bloom effect. How did you use/create these effects.

Thank you. I'm glad to see that the spatial impression appears to be worth the effort.
The bloom effect is a post effect that is delivered with Unity3D. The car paints and the fresnel reflection get rendered with a custom shader. I guess there are any public car paint shader out there because unfortunately I cannot release the used one.

Btw I do hate the bottom of hoods .

The last days and weeks I did not made much progress but everything is over now and time finally available. I created and already closed the engine bay. Additionally I started off with detailing. The engine bay itself becomes more detailed by and by. The hood I'm going to finish after the engine bay is completed. The engine is the last object to complete this area.

The polycount with engine may increase alot so I keep things simpler to save some. Results are not that accurate then, of course.

Later on, in the real-time viewer, the complete engine and engine bay get hidden when the hood is closed. Including the trunk that may massively decrease the overall count. I'm not sure yet if the hood can get opened in a closeup view only so other elements like wheels, trunk or even interior can be hidden.

Small updates I'm going to show as 2d images. Completed areas can be watched in the 3d viewer afterwards.

The cover of the headlights and grille as well as the antisway bar is also done.

Don't get shocked by the wire shot . I'm actually experimenting to get even smoother surfaces. My purpose for this car is a nearly perfect reflective surface. As you see there is definitely much space for optimizations but right now it brings the best result to continue the work elsewhere. A higher polycount of the body is intended though because I want to add more detail cameras in the 3d viewer later.

At least you noticed the clean body so the basic mission is accomplished . I try to achieve 150.000 tris including everything. Wheels, interior, exterior, engine etc. The first person cockpit becomes more detailed than the exterior cockpit so I might make a very detailed one since all exterior parts can be excluded from the renderer.

    very nice work bro !

but tell me do you use splines or nurbs ? or you did it with polygonal modeling ? cut on some area it look weird .

    keep it up !

    Hi Salim,
this car is a weird combination of everything. Nurbs bring the best results regarding the shape and smoothness but I have no real control of the polygons (still using 3ds max). I created surfaces with splines and used the "Surface" modifier. I also used splines for the edge loops and aligned vertices manually. Some areas have been smoothed with "Turbosmooth". Details have also been created with poly by poly modeling.

I must admit it's the ugliest wire I have ever had but the surface is as smooth as I've never had before. I'm going to clean up this later, when more details are added. Cutting into a curved surface is always a pain (like a gas cap). The more tris you have, the smoother is the cut result. Afterwards the surroundings can be reduced. I used this technique to cut all the windows into the hull of my Catwalk yacht and the shading result is great.

However, I completed the wipers which I hate most because there are always 2 of them and they are always differently bent . Simply using the "Bend" modifier does not work because the wipers don't fit on the windshield then. At least GT5 is a great supplier of references. Even for the Gallardo I could spot and capture difficult areas.

This time I avoid using shaded edges and keep most of them sharp. That helps to keep the tri-count low or use more tris for more details.

Btw the windshield has been optimized in its tri-count already .

hhh nice work bro ! i've been using this technic on some cars i did for a game !

the pain will be when you'll start smoothing and reduicing the poly . but that only if you plan to change the sharpe edges .

The hood itself is done. It's not as detailed as the original one. That would heavily increase the tri count. The hinges and outer air intakes are coming next to completely finish the hood.

Thanks but a real Challenger would be so much better . Usually I always buy a diecast model of the car I'm just working on to get even better impressions but I didn't find a stock version of the Challenger yet, only a drag version and the Challenger Concept. Now I only work with photos from the net but the researches really take a while especially for hidden details. Who seeks will find and so I found and even purchased a Dodge Challenger SRT8 Engine for better references . A good price for accuracy.

Not much visual progress but it took me a full day to complete the hinges and hood props which at least don't intersect with anything anymore.

I also received the Challenger engine which is an awesome reference indeed. The outer air intakes are still missing to complete the hood but afterwards I can go about the real fun part.

Since I'm renovating my home, I must interrupt indefinitely so here is the current state of the engine.

Regarding the tri count, using shaded edges might increase this monster to 100k+. So I keep it "simple" even here. For the exterior view I'm going to bake down the details and switch to this high detailed version in the close-up view when other expensive details can be hidden.
