IMSA Mazda RX-792P
howdy all...
im taking a break from the SuperGT guff for the moment, because im a bit bored with them...ive been doing a bit of overtime at work, so i dont feel like modelling something like the F430 because its just too dull (sorry crazy989 )..so im starting up a new car in the mean time, which will be replacing the Celicas in my sigpic
im curious if anyone here will actually be able to tell me what the car is, its a bit obscure...ive spline caged up most of the front, so it should be identifiable...first one to name it correctly gets a cookie
its worth noting the cars from this series are even higher up on my "Super Duper Cars of Pure Awesomeness™" list than SuperGT cars ...especially this one
the aussie touring cars will have to be neglected for a little longer (i have been painting more of them though, really i have...)

well done .59 Reverse...heres your cookie
its the Mazda RX-792P from the 1992 IMSA championship...its about the closest thing to a 787B successor...however it only shared the R26B 4-rotor, the rest of the car was completely new...unfortunately they must have forgot that it needed alot of cooling when they were designing it, so the RX-792P spent most of its time turning its exhaust pipes into puddles of bubbling molten goo ...hence why its obscure...
i believe a guy bought all 3 of the race cars plus the non-running concept mockup in 2006, and he runs them at a couple of historic car meets...
doing more IMSA cars is really tempting...Jaguar XJR-14, Toyota Eagle, Nissan GTP ZX, and of course the Porky 962...theyre all so drool worthy...but theres only a couple of SuperGT cars left to do, so im still not sure yet
anyhow, the spline cage for the RX-792 is pretty much done, so ill be starting it up tomorrow night

right...made a start...im already aware of most of the problems (big bump behind the headlights, dodgy area above the rear wheel, some creases are too hard etc.) so ill be fixing them as soon as i can get back on it...

done some more...for some reason i tried lining up an extra photo to work off...it didnt give me any extra information in the end...big waste of time, should have just kept modelling with what id already setup
theres four configs ive seen for it, currently doing the high downforce sprint, others are:
- show car: has no vents, holes or air intakes anywhere, has headlights fitted, non-functional rear wing
- low downforce sprint: has no front canards, the rear wing has fewer components and is much lower down behind the car
- endurance: same as low downforce, also has headlights fitted
should finish the Furai off and do a new 787b model, then ill have a set!
also...i have an experiment to try afterwards, end result will be a midpoly model...i dont know how well itll work yet, but theres only one way to find out...
@sergo: ...no, its just polymodelling as usual...i dont know anything about NURBs...
@crazy989: is it gone now?

Would be great to have midpoly version for it. Todays game cars look like render models, just with less polies.

ok, the hi-polyness is nagging at me already...ive redone the wheels in the last half an hour...so thats cut out over 260000 polys from each wheel already ...old hi-poly one on the left, new med-poly is on the right
i dont really have a poly limit for this, just as long as its less than before while still looking the same...ill think about wasted polys later
@schaefft: yeah, they do, hence why i want to try it out
@Catlin:
@advan: yeah, its not the usual slab sided Group C body shape, its got some nice curvy bits to it

ok, heres my first crappy practice "mid-poly" mesh, i want to do it a few times to work out the process...please excuse the crude render aswell, i didnt feel like wasting too much time on it seeing as its only a draft...this is 199580 tris, which a bit high, but theres a few things concerning that that
first problem is im not sure how many polys are needed to stop the jagged reflections...ive attached some GT5 pics to show what im talking about too...basically its curved surfaces that dont have enough polys to keep the reflections smooth...it sticks out like a sore thumb when anything sharp reflects off it (to me at least) and it kinda ruins it in the same way a pinch/bump on a hi-poly model does...i really want to get rid of them so the poly count might have to go up a bit more
the other problem is when i cut the panel gaps into flat polygons, the reflections dont quite line up anymore...i think thats because the smoothing group isnt going across them anymore (again, like turbosmooth on a hi-poly model), but not sure what the best way to fix that is yet
so...yeah...thats the end of my long winded post
