yeah me too, but as far as I know, only the brochure-car didn't have that plate... that's what makes it hard to decide for me...

How long can it take to model said plate? Since it is the only difference, model it, put it aside and then bring it back later if you think the model needs it to look more real.

Your trumpets are called RAM PIPES. Go with right one.

I knew that they are called ram pipes, but not everyone knows what I'm talking about when I use that word

I think seekerr is right, I will just model the plate, and see what it looks like later on

sorry if i go into kiddie-mode, but
THIS JUST RULES SOOO DAMN MUCH!

whew. now i feel better. i've been waiting for someone to take care of the 917 kh for so long, it's unbelieveable. the amount of detail you pack into the car... just awesome. i don't know if you updated your steel framework of the car as shown on the first page of this thread - if not, you should, because there's a few parts missing . i know, because i spent weeks on searching for reference pics and drawings of this car (came across a few pages where people rebuilt one 917kh from original parts beautifully documented with photos, same for a 330p4). anyway, i did start modelling a 917kh sometime last year, never got to do much besides the pipe-frame (my first 3d-car project anyway).
i spent more time researching than modelling and then i ran out of sparetime anyway. so if you need referene pics, drop me a line (~700pics harvested of the net)

the 917 is (imho) one of the most beautiful racecars ever, along with a 330p4, a 250gt swb competizione and the 275 spider n.a.r.t

sky / surprise! productions

Sitting there watching that powder-blue and orange 917 barreling down the Mulsanne and getting squirrelly
under braking was the exact moment when I stopped thinking Corvettes were the coolest cars on earth.

sky^sp, thanks for your awesome reply!
the frame is on a pause for a moment, because I am working on a better method for creating frames than I am currently using.
Can you please give me the site of the guys rebuilding the 917?
Is it Gunnar racing, or a different site?

Thanks and regards,
Jille,
recovering from a hard night, having a lot of sore muscles now

ps: here's a new update on the engine. This time, a screenshot, in stead of a render, to show you the blueprints and the model at the same time.

The exact location of the cylinders and the ram-pipes is not correct yet, since I don't have a good top-view yet (I'm drawing one, based on the huge 917 blueprints)... Also, I need to modify the scale of the cylinders. Anyways, I hope you guys like it!

Ouch! Those are some detailed prints! Do they actually line up, or are you positioning by guess-tamation?

Anyhow, looking good!

cpd: Thanks man, good to see you here as well
G-spec: I'm not that good and I won't stop working!
seekerr: They are detailed indeed! They really do line up almost exactly. But since they don't have any units on them, I don't model it with the exact measured sizes...
*RedStar*: Thanks! Expect more soon!

x-per: well, there are multiple LeMans-versions of the short-tail. This one is the 1971 LeMans version, as driven by Van Lennep and Marco. I also modelled a rear-part without the fins, so I can easily turn it into earlier or later models if I want (not always possible, since some specific models have front-differences as well). Carl was restoring a standard 917 Kurzheck (shorttail), together with the guys from Gunnar Racing. He made some slight changes to it, like some Wyer-Gulf updates, but you are right, there are no fins on it.
But I'm modelling the 1971 LeMans winner, since it was driven by a Dutch guy, and still holds the distance-record for les 24 Heures du Mans.

Flash_Gordon: thanks I love the details as well
WhtMk3Drvr: thanks man. got some bananas?

Updates can be expected tomorrow, since this week I have been really busy on a paper for my master-graduation...

edit: getting kinda tired... have been working on the cylinder-covers, but deleted the stuff I just did on it, 6 times already... I'm not yet satisfied, but soon I hope to be as happy as these two lads:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I just got this error while opening my Rhino file...
The backup that I saved yesterday has it as well!!!

I can hit YES till eternity, but it won't work...
The only shape it will open from the file is my distributor...
I really hope this doesn't mean I need to redo the fans, and stuff like that...

Who can help me?!
