Enzo Pine Wood Derby machining project

I am glad I found this forum!

So I was challenged by a friend to machine a block of pine wood into a ferrari. For those of you that don't know about the pine wood derby, it is run by the Boy Scouts. Your child gets a block of wood, wheels, etc to carve into a car that is then raced on a sloping track.

So I started with a hot wheels 1/12 scale die cast, set it on the computer controlled mill and have been measuring it and generating surfaces in CATIA. I then generate machine code to carve the car.

I have most of the top surfaces measured but I am looking for a faster path to completion.

If anyone would like to donate an IGS format Enzo model that is somewhat accurate, I will send them a machined block of wood that looks like an Enzo (assuming all works out, etc, disclaimer).

My work in process is attached. Not a very good image, I didn't want to overload and I am not worried about rendering.

So far I have measured about 500 points and hand transcribed them by hand into the modeling program.

That's pretty sweet, who's gonna race the car.

my friend's son will race the car. I am also going to donate one to our school auction in my son's name. It is probably considered cheating so they will only race the car in the "unlimited" class.

I test machined the roof today. Turned out great, minimal scalloping from the tool, easily sanded. Panel lines are easy since I just run a profile cut on the lines a little deeper.

I'm working on the back deck now.

wow, this is really cool

Unfortunately, I don't have an Enzo mesh, but I do have some Porsches, like the Porsche 917, 917/30 and 911, and lots of other car-models, including a Lamborghini Diablo and an Countach LP400

So if you would like that... let me know

Neat project. But wouldn't the block of wood be too narrow? The one I got for the derby years ago was only a couple inches wide. Oh well...good luck with that

the block they give you is 1.75 wide but the car width can be up to 2.75. Most kids wouldn't be able to cut the wheels into a wider block. The model I am using is 4.06 wide, so I need to scale it down.

I couldn't resist cutting the front. I can do better but time would double and, for a test cut, this was good enough. I used RED wood.

Not a very good picture. I scaled it down from 4mpixels but the lighting isn't good and the Canon doesn't do macro well.
