The Real Vehicles of the Toy Car Movie Project

you may remember this thread as "2004 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Wagon" ... however... I want to create a few more 'real' vehicles for my project ... so... here goes.... changing my thread

This is my car... only as a 3d model...

this is actually going into my toy car movie project, however I am doing this for a different project... just to have my car as a 3d model, as well as to pull an april fool's joke on some people... but yeah, here's my car

btw, 600 faces... so yeah, hopefully the proof is in the pudding that textures can make all the difference in the world... I plan on texturing the rest of the cars I do in this similar fashion, using a diffuse map, reflection map, reflection amount map, specular level, and gloss level... so that basically means this car would fit right in with today's games just perfectly ....

looking very good for only 600 polys! textures are awesome, but can you render it a little larger so we can see it better?

for that texture I mostly used photos and stuff for textures, and tricked out lighting, which I didn't want to save in my file, so I've already lost all the stuff I used for that render... but once I get done with the bodywork shell, and start getting ready to model the interior, then I'll post some large renders, and possibly a wire or two as well

The .gif file was created in Adobe ImageReady ... Basically I just rotated the object, then rendered, and printscreen'ed the render window as a frame in imageready. Then just cropped it when I was done, and resized it, since it was still rather large

here's the majority of the bodywork done so far... just need the grille and the luggage rack and brakelight and I'll be ready to start the interior, then it's on to texturing

oh yeah, forgot the wire images, I'll get those when I have the interior done

Looks great, can't wait to see this all finished. What's the polycount so far?

The only thing to crit is that the roof actually looks a little bit too smooth,
but that's just by eye.

it weighs in at 2886 faces at the moment, I've started a bit of work on the luggage rack at the top, which has put in a few more faces than you see there... but yeah, my goal is no more than 4500 faces for any of the vehicles I make, which shouldn't be too hard to get under on this car, as I don't see the interior taking up that many faces...

more progress... don't know how many of you are familiar with my demo reel, but even though this is using a craptacular method of wrappping a photo onto the model (which still looks fairly decent due to the way I've set up my materials) this model completely blows the rest of my car models that were on my reel out of the water! so yeah, I'm going to use a texture method that simulates wrapping a photo onto the model, only, it's going to be hand-made, and it's not going to have any of the stretching or seam issues that are noticeable on these renders.

But anyway, just posting this to show y'all what I've been working on... I might also make prints from this as well, and upload them into my picture reference thread, since this model is actually more accurate in my mind than my photos were.

oh yeah, the kicker? The model is 3640 faces. The texture, though horribly laid-out for an unwrap of a vehicle, is 512x512 pixels. Specular Color, Specular Level numbers, Glossiness Level numbers, and Diffuse maps are used. So technically, this model is fully video-game style. Just about any video game engine can make this car exactly like this
