First EVER Model

this is like my 3rd day with Maya and this is the first thing ive made.

It turned out kind of rough after i tried smoothing it and Chamfering (have no clue what that does but you guys always talk about it with the cars so i figured it was helpful)

(did it without a tutorial but by the looks of it i should have used one)

Chamfering: If you dont use a chamfer then if you were to smooth a block like the left side of the image you would get a large curve between the two nearest edges, if you chamfer (right sie of image)you can get either a smaller curve, or if you use a small chamfer (like 0.1 say) it gives you a sharpe edge and stops mesh smooth's from messing up you shapes . Hope That helps

P.s: Sorry bout really bad image

it does in theory , but it does it by making the curve smaller.

Well the easyest way to explain it goes like this.
Say you have 1 edge as a corner then it will go really smooth. Now if you chamfer that edge then basically it doubles. Now you have 2 edges instead if one. What meshsmooth does is it basically only makes the area between the two edges round so if you chamfer an edge with a very small value the edge will look sharp but the closer you look the more you'll see that it is actually a round edge.
It's also possible to chamfer with a value of 0. it doesn't make the edge as sharp as possible but it does look rather good. That brings along another problem though, you can't really control it anymore since the verticles are on the exact same spot.

My advice to you-make chamfer and meshsmooth one of your best friends. When modelling anything detailed using the polymoddeling way then the more you know about chamfer, the better.

If anything is still a bit complicated feel free to ask. You might not find any of my projects around here because i haven't posted anything for a while but rest assured i have my share of knowledge about it and i can help. Actually a lot of people ariund here can help. We are a friendly community.

Good luck man.

Oliver
