Mercedes-Benz S class w140

So, I'm making my first car. I'm fairly new to modeling, and I haven't read any tutorials on the subject, so I'm mostly winging this and hoping it turns out pretty

So, here goes. There's not much to show, I just started making the hood, it seemed an easy place to start. Please critisize, I'm in the early stages of learning, so I need a lot of suggestions to help me get better at this.

The first picture is my model and the second is my reference...

Re: Mercedes-Benz S class w140

Just a little update. This is taking me forever :x

I'm aware of the pinch in the side, and the slight depression in the middle of the hood. All will be addressed soon

That pinching is a quite weird mistake.. Since you posted a refpic showing that the edge runs aside the grille, and doesn't stop above it
Nice start though Lovely choice of car too, though I'd rather see the old C class

I'll fix that ridge once I get back into max

I don't know how the pinch happened either, I just chamfered the edge so that it would have a definitive line there, and when I performed mesh smooth it pinched.

Re: Mercedes-Benz S class w140

Humph, anytime I try to chamfer, it messes up like that, and is impossible to fix

Is there another way to make a hard edge like that?

Re: Mercedes-Benz S class w140

i see some mistakes in the mesh

and with that concentration of polies you dont need to use chamfer. It already should be sharp.
But if you still want to use chamfer, remove a few lines of edges first.

Re: Mercedes-Benz S class w140

Here we go...

First off with every update could you post a unsmoothed wireframe.
Second. When you chamfer something just zoom in and have closer look at the whole area you chamfered. Whereever you see a triangle weld two verticles in together so that everywhere woud be only 4 sided polys. The same goes for sided poly.s With meshsmooth added the non-4-sided polys will mess things up real bad.
And as NE said the sharper edge doesn't end there, it goes all the way down.

Good luck,
Oliver.

Re: Mercedes-Benz S class w140

Thanks for the suggestions. I know for a fact that there are some 3 and 5 sided polys in there. Unfortunately, I will be away most of the day, but once I get back I'll try out all the suggestions.

Re: Mercedes-Benz S class w140

Okay, I'm trying to sort out my problems before I go on, unfortunately I'm having a lot :x

But hey, first shot, waddya expect.

Anyways. I'm trying to sort out the 3/5 sided polygon problem, and not having much luck really ops:

As you can see in the screen shot, there is a very obvious 3 sided poly. Unfortunately, if I weld two sides together, I end up creating another 3sided poly, and the vicious circle begins. I tried deleting an edge, but that removes the polygon completely. Ideas? I'm getting really frustrated with the plethora of problems I'm encountering.

:?
