1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS (Need some help please)

This is my first car model that i took seriously, my previous attempts barely reached half way, so i'm in need of some help at the moment.
I am having alot of trouble setting up a scene to render my car in, and the materials i made are awful, really awful - maybe someone could help me out a bit here? my chrome looks dull/crappy, my carpaint looks like cheap plastic and the headlight glass is horrible, It could be my render setup, i have tried mental ray with global illumination and final gather, and the shadows seem to glow, and the lit areas seem darker than the shadows? until i can get mental ray sorted i'm using the default scanline renderer.

Also need some help with ideas for text on the tyres, i really dont have a clue what kind of brand/model of tyres they are, but i think the wheels would look twice as good if they had some sort of text, so suggestions for that are welcome, same goes for rims - im not sure what kind of rims should go onto the tyres (current rims are placeholders).

Its also got alot more work needed, hence the reason its in the w.i.p forum.

Im using 3ds Max 7.0, and i dont have Vray* I only have Mental ray and default scanline, I also dont have any hdri's*

Crits on the accuracy of the model are appreciated too, thanks*

Re: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS

First gen camaro, one of my favourite cars... my dad used to own a '67 back when I was a kid...

Spotted a few errors tho, the rear lights are wrong... the lines on them should go straight down, not bent like on your model (see the pic) Also the front bumper should be a little thicker imo...

Please what ever you do with it don't ruin it with chameleon color... please? I would advice you to stick with scanline renderer, mentalray is too tough to set up correctly imho and besides you can get pretty good results with the scanline renderer.

Other than the problems pointed out earlier I think the model looks good and clean

Re: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS

thanks for the crits, you are correct, though about the rear lights, though i had found some references of a modified camaro, and i decided it looked more unique.

Re: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS

A small update, and i have redone the front bumper, this time i cut a slot out of the body work for it to sit in, like it does on the real car (before i was lazy and just let it clip through each other, and it looked hella crappy), and i have also made the rear bumper.
I've also done alot of reshaping here and there, which is probably un-noticable.

Next things to do are the door handles and the rear view mirrors, both of which im not looking foward to, they never turn out successful for me*

and then i'll need some serious help with materials the materials i have, now decided to give me some really ugly black blotches randomly across my model*

Re: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS

also, when uv mapping, should i apply the Unwrap UVW modifier above or below the Turbosmooth modifier in the stack of modifiers? (im using max 7)

When i previously tried uv mapping a high poly gun of mine, the textures became slightly warped when i applied the UVmap before the Smoother, and when i tried applying it after the smoother it was really laggy to try and work with the uv arrangements, any tips on easily uv mapping the body of the car?

Re: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS

The rear looks better now IMO, but there something that bothers me on the front render... don't know what is it exactly, maybe there's something wrong with the windshield? :?

Re: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS

probably the lights, the materials or something - for some reasong they always render as duds, they have the same material as all the other chrome on the car, oh well i shouldnt be worrying about the materials at the moment, i have a long way to go before i render a final.

Edit: just noticed a small error at the top of the front windshield, the seem must have under/over welded the right ammount of verts

Re: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS

The front looks great but the surface around the rear window looks a litle bit stange in the specularity.

To create the image more intresting you could create a wite or light gray background so the car will stand out a lite bit instead of get suckt in to the dark background. Then you could work with some image composition. (Attaching one image.) The eye is reading the image from the botom of the left corner to the upper right corner.
Render the image with as low camera angel as posible without loosing details in the image that makes the image intresting, like bumps and vents on the hood.

Hope that you can read my bad english.

Re: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Itīs looking good, but is there something wrong with the front fenders? And the upper part of the windshield frame looks too straight... Rest of the model looks good

I agree with Inquieto, and I also think that the wheels are too big... otherwise good
