Actually, you can get CF bike wheels, where I took the idea from:

Ah, I see.

The gold one looks, erm, interesting. Looks a little like petrified snot -- or what I would imagine it to look like

The carbon is pretty nice overall. Maybe a little too reflective and just a tad too glossy?

Yes, I agree with the reflections. I'm still looking into that. I've not had much time to model recently.

hmm well i meant on a car i guess the physical stress on the rim is a lot bigger than on a bike so the CF might give away too easily, compared to aluminium

Well, first off here's my PC specs:

Athlon 64 3700+ SD @ 2.6 GHz.
2GB Corsair PC3500LL Pro.
7900 GTX
2x identical 120GB Maxtor Drives.

Basically, I modelled a wheel, it's tyre and some other stuff. It's running 2x mesh smooth on each part. About 3 parts in total. As it stands I cannot move it accross the screen whilst it's all smoothed, its almost impossible! It's just so unresponsive.

I'm quite disappointed that It can't handle more. I have a vehicle shell I have to put it with, it'll never handle all that at once at this rate.

I can run intensive games and I can run the CPU 100% and my temps are about 45 degs so I don't think it's hardware as such. I have also tried Open GL and DirectX modes. Neither improve anything.

Is there something I'm missing here? I can't find much information about this and it's really annoying as I have a lot of ideas I want to put into my work but its just impossible to work with.

Just to show, this is the model before the tyre... not that high poly but it struggle with it just like that:

This is the wire with triangle count, but is only 38664 actualy 4 sided polygons in total. This machine should be able to handle a lot lot more, smoothed or not.

Please ignore the rubbish tyre btw, my first attempt at a tyre... needs work

how about turn smoothing off, then move the camera viewport and then turn it on. turn it off check a differenent angle ... ect. afaik you can check a box in the smoothing otions where it says it should only smooth when rendering. that might help

Tyre update. Getting there with it. Just the edge of the tread to fix. Tiring work and totally mind numbing after a while.

Fixed my speed issues too.

Why thanks, here's the update tread! Looking much better now. I just need to fix the sidewall where it meets the rim. Aiming for the stretched look.
