if you are using the standard 3DSMax renderer it should be the scanline or mental ray renderer. just look in the render window which plug in you are using. (press F10)
yeah I saw the same thing with both of them underneath eachother now... gonna fix that asap...
and yeah the renderer that I'm using is that Scanline you said

okay did some thing on it again... will be the last update for today.

you probably won't see it hard, but there is a "glass" ontop of the molding now... just can't see it well due to the clay rendering. I moved the modling a bit to the back and narrowed those edges, they look much sharper now. Thx for pointing that out Silent][Moebius

Well I toughed that they had about the same size as a normal car, but I still need to give them some thinkness. Right now they are just a space between parts. If I feel it's nescesairy I'll make them a little bit closer to eachother, but for now I'm gonna leave those as they are.

EDIT: forgot to ask, does someone know a nice setting for a "clay" material?

okay did a new piece that I've never done before, the exhaust... at first I wanted to just make the end of it, but while making it I just felt that it didn't look complete, so I started to work more to the back and before I knew it I had this ....

oh and the qeustion still stands, does someone know a good setting for a clay material?

EDIT: added an extra render

EDIT2: added another render

Found this tutorial for clay renders without Vray or Brazil:
http://www.oman3d.com/tutorials/3ds/clayrender_stealth/
It's no big deal anyway, but hope it helped you.

It just says clay is used to show off details, which i think your renders do okay. They look pretty good for non Vray or Brazil stuff.
But if you're really that displeased with your results, try getting Vray. It's only 1.5Mb or so

don't you have to pay for Vray?

last time I checked it wasn't exactly for free you know,... I'm still recovering from the 3dsmax purchase

Don't tell me you paid up over 5000$ for 3DSmax, nobody but professional artists do that
I have a student's license for Max, which was 130€, reasonable enough I'd say, but Vray costs 250$ for such a license, compared to 799$ full, that, and my school doesn't offer Vray (digital classes are a joke here anyway).

@ Xoliul: lol ofcourse I didn't buy the professional one, it's not like I'm rich or anything
no my max costed me €140... but for someone that is still in high school and has a car (and girl) to maintain, it's not that cheap...

@ Prykie: what's this stuff about floating servers and stuff? I don't know much about those thing, care to explain?

as for an update, I think I finished the exhaust unless someone spots anything... was really fun working on it. I never did one before and its a nice change from all that body work. I know that most of it won't really show up, but I wanted to know for myself if I could do it and well for a first attempt it looks good to me. (added a picture of the real exhaust, I know it isn't the standard one but I didn't find any good pics of it )

it's a B&B exhaust system, it's made for the Audi A6 ... could be that it would fit under a RS4, but I don't know for sure...
