The storyline says that the doors are welded shut, but they still had the gap around the door. The real General Lee cars that were used for filming never had the doors welded shut, in fact on some episodes you can hear the doors close, off camera, even though they never actually opened the doors when being filmed, so as to give the impression that they were welded shut.
It's an interesting point though - There are lots of details on the General Lee that are difficult to get right as so many cars were used throughout the series and in the film. The first one ever (LEE1) had a much narrower bull bar, same width wheels and tyres all round, no back seat, standard chrome sill covers, full cage with light tan padding, crooked '1' on the driver's door, etc etc. Cars used later on in the series had all sorts of different details that seemed to change from week the other, sometimes from one scene to the next as the production crew used whatever they could lay their hands on. There's even cases where '68 cars had their back lights and rear panel painted to look like '69 units.
My version is just a replica, how I would build a General Lee if I was ever lucky enough to own a Charger. But, if I did own a Charger, I wouldn't build a General Lee, I'd do other things, so I plan to do renders of that too
