Whenever somebody tells you to switch your software dont listen to them unless your using a ****ty low poly modeling software and you want to do high poly. The deal with all the high quality software on the market today is they all do almost the same thing. Only thing that matters is what you are happy with. I myself use 3D Studio max and have used it for years. People have told me to switch to XSI, Maya, Lightwave and i didnt say no right away i tried it but at the end i felt 3d max is my home. So if your using some software you like very much STAY WITH IT!
Also there are 2 major modeling styles out there which use different software. There is Poly and Nurbs. For nurbs you dont want to use any software thats made for poly modeling even if it can do nurbs. Main reason is cuz it sux. 3D max is very bad for nurbs. Only software i can think of thats good with nurbs and poly is probly Maya.
About the tutorials. Here is a link to them. THey are made in 3d studio max. But the technique should remain the same
