Jaguar XJ220 - My first car
Yup! I have really BASIC experience but I thought I'd dive right in and have a box modelling attempt with a tutorial (although I'm using a different car than the tutorial
)So... yeah. It's a very early W.I.P., but it's been a personal dream of mine to have my own WIP thread on SMcars for a month or two now, so here I am! EVERY piece of constructive comment and help on box modeling is actually quite welcome, since I'm a beginner. I'm trying real hard to find how to place my basic vertexes in lines so they don't look too messed up, but I'll have to concede that right now it's not looking too good. Not too bad either, I'm still proud of my first try ![]() Note: Uploaded them on Imageshack since they're so early. Workspace Render (non smoothed) Thanks! ----------EDITS--------- 01/31 Perspective Hood close up Last edited by bloojays : 01-31-2007 at 08:23 PM. |

The blueprint lacks some stuff but I probably can get it from references good enough!Heres a question about the 4-side polygons: I know about now doing 5 sided and more, but am I allowed triangles here? Placing quadrangles only to make some shapes is something I still can't do well, although I'm working on it ![]() Have a look at the screenshots (and a quick meshsmooth, no smoothing groups whatsoever, it's something I don't know of yet) Workspace Smoothed Side view I'm also aware that the smooth killed the lower parts of my sideskirt, where a certain number of edges converge to a welded vertex. I'm guessing (by the view of this) that this is not good? ![]() Thanks for the tips! |

looking at your project, i was also going to ask if thats box modelling, and it is indeed a quite amount of work to form a box into a car, may i suggest part modelling, simply model each part of the car one at a time, i believe this will result in a much more impressive output, but this is just my opinion, i understand that for some people box modelling is easier (although i cant imagine how) but this is just a suggestion to try a new technique, and see how it turns out, then you can decide what you like better
, usually, when you part model, you can control the poly flow better. |

This jaguar is my first car, however, and must I add how proud of it (and myself!) I am?? This project is exceptional for me and I'm learning a great deal of stuff about modeling, and finishing it will add to the overall experience... My next attempt will be part modeling, that's for sure. And beside, the blueprint lacks some stuff (I can't see the hood curve through the headlights, It lacks basics like the door handles...) so I'm part blind on some parts..My question about triangles is still in here! Must I avoid them ? They can make my life easier sometimes ![]() Updating my first post with my daily progress. Keep the comments coming! ![]() Note: I had a hard time for the hood traps but I like how it is right now, although it's looking weird at the extremities (nurbs smooth) and the lack of interior makes seeing through the trap pretty weird. Oh! And I also fixed the side bug (hotfix) by adding polys under the car... it's sad I had to do this but at least it's not bugged anymore ![]() Perspective Hood close up |

Triangles...Sure you can use them, but ONLY if you have to ;-)
